In case you have not noticed, just like Twitter, Facebook has also introduced tags# for Facebook. We have witnessed the usage of #tags earlier in certain social media networks and it is not something that is new to us. Some of the avid Facebook users are quite happy as their long anticipation has finally come to an end. They can now use the tags# to connect to others better than before. Most of the users who are greatly pleased by this announcement by the social media giant are Instagram and Twitter addicts.

On the other hand, there are others who are mortified with this new addition. These users feel that their newsfeed will be invaded with the onslaught of #tags. The reason for this is that they feel that #tags belong to Twitter, the rival of Facebook. But, as social media addicts we know that #tags are also used in Tumblr, Pinterest, etc. It has become a growing necessity in the world of social media. We have come across #tags on Facebook in the past as it has been used in some fabulous memes.

For some the prior absence of Facebook #tags was a relief; it was that one feature that really set Facebook apart from rest of the social media networks. Just like many things, the negativity towards #tags was mainly due to misunderstanding. Anyways, there is no point in rambling about the stereotypical mentality of #tag users. Some of us know that #tags do serve a purpose as it works like a keyword. Using a #tag in front of a word implies that your post will appear if anyone searches for that specific word.

Let’s just say, as a music lover you have posted something about any particular artiste or album with a #tag in front i.e. #PinkFloyd Pulse. Now, if anyone searches the word “Pink Floyd” or “Pulse” he or she will come across your post. This can create a buzz as viewers can post comments, feedback or like your post. #tags allow people to come across an array of relevant topics or posts on social media. Moreover, people can get useful updates or notifications.

Hashtags are commonly used by social media users to unite people having similar interests. This is an effective way of communication that can be used by businesses for social media marketing. We can also use this to stay connected with someone or something important to us.

The benefits of using hashtags on Facebook are many. These are:

  • Facebook still holds the largest chunk of social media market. The use of #tags on the world’s leading social media platform can help users to implement various marketing strategies.
  • Cross-platform #tags can be used by companies for various promotional campaigns.

Primarily, #tags are mainly used to make online search much faster and easier since most of the topics having #tags are arranged as per their category. Moreover, #tag users are greatly benefitted as more & more relevant online users can join various topics for conversations.

#tags are useful tools for viral marketing as controversial issues or topics can be presented in an interesting or exciting manner for sharing and reposting comments. For instance, you can check out the popular @ThreeUK’s hashtag #DancePonyDance, which has thousands of retweets and favorites. Moreover, one should keep in mind that a hashtag should be directly related to the topic of discussion for better response from viewers.
